Zinc aids athlete's foot treatment
Efficacy of undecylenic acid-zinc undecylenate powder in culture positive tinea pedis.
Study shows positive outcomes
We explored the effectiveness of a powder containing 2% undecylenic acid and 20% zinc undecylenate for treating athlete's foot, also known as tinea pedis. In a double-blind study, 151 participants were assigned to apply either the active powder or a placebo twice daily for four weeks. The results were telling.

From the 85 patients with confirmed fungal infections, a remarkable 88% of those using the active powder had negative cultures after the treatment, compared to only 17% in the placebo group. Additionally, 80% of those on the active treatment were found to be free of fungus in KOH skin scrapings after four weeks, while only 49% of placebo users achieved this. Furthermore, we observed significant improvement in symptoms like itching, burning, erythema, and scaling, with no side effects reported.

Overall, our findings indicate that the combination of undecylenic acid and zinc may offer a robust solution for individuals suffering from athlete's foot, effectively reducing fungal presence and alleviating uncomfortable symptoms. However, it is important to note that while zinc played a role in this combination treatment, we cannot fully assess its isolated effect on its own without further studies.

Zinc-enhanced treatment for athlete’s foot
Efficacy, Safety, and Cost-effectiveness of Zinc Oxide Nanoparticles in Whitfield's Spirit Solution for Treating Superficial Fungal Foot Infections: A Randomized Controlled Trial.
Moderately relevant to athlete's foot
Our research examined the effectiveness of a new antifungal treatment that combines zinc oxide nanoparticles with Whitfield's spirit solution, aiming to improve the management of superficial fungal foot infections, commonly known as athlete's foot.

We conducted a rigorous eight-week randomized controlled trial involving 84 participants, with 70 completing the study. This trial compared the new formulation, referred to as ZnO-WFs, against traditional Whitfield's solution and a zinc oxide nanoparticle solution on its own. Both treatments were effective in treating athlete’s foot, but we observed promising trends suggesting that ZnO-WFs might offer more advantages, especially for certain tough-to-treat fungal infections.

Our results demonstrated that patients using both ZnO-WFs and Whitfield's spirit exhibited similar success rates, significantly better than those using just the zinc solution. Notably, in cases of non-dermatophyte mold infections—often harder to treat—ZnO-WFs showed a tendency towards higher cure rates compared to Whitfield's solution alone, which could make it a more appealing option for specific cases. Additionally, it was more cost-effective for managing these infections.

Overall, zinc oxide's inclusion in the treatment not only showed efficacy but also hints at a potential edge in simplifying treatment strategies for athlete’s foot, especially when dealing with resistant fungal types.
